Le plan de Rommel

Face à la 8ème Armée, installée sur un front nord-sud entre Aïn el Gazala et Bir Hakeim, et dans la profondeur du triangle Gazala-Bir Hakeim-Tobrouk, l’idée de manœuvre de Rommel consiste :

- à simuler un effort principal sur la moitié Nord du front, à hauteur d’Alem Hamsa,

- à profiter de la diversion pour engager le gros de ses forces blindées et mécanisées dans un large contournement par le Sud, de façon à mener un raid éclair Sud-Nord sur la direction El Adem-Tobrouk,

- à confier la mission à la division italienne Ariete de s’emparer dans la foulée de la position de Bir Hakeim le 27 mai matin,

- puis à traverser le dispositif britannique en son centre sur la direction Segnali Nord-El Adem, effort confié à la division Trieste, de façon à acheminer directement la logistique de l’action principale.

Ce plan est mis en œuvre le 26 mai au soir, et la situation le 27 soir, après 24 heures de combat, représentée sur le schéma ci-dessus, traduit clairement cette vision tactique, conforme à la personnalité de Rommel.

Rommel’s Plan

Facing the 8th Army along the North-South line between Aïn el Gazala and Bir Hakeim and in the depth of the triangle Gazala-Bir Hakeim-Tobrouk, Rommel’s concept of operation was as follows:  

- To simulate a main effort in the North astride Alem Hamsa,

- To take advantage of this diversion to engage the main body of his forces in an armoured and mechanized flanking manoeuvre  to launch an attack South-North along an axis El Adem - Tobruk,

-  To seize Bir Hakeim, using the “Ariete” Italian Division, on the morning of 27 May; then

- To cut through the centre of the British deployment on the axis North Segnali-El Adem, with the “Trieste” division leading, in order to manage his own logistics.

This plan was implemented on the evening of the 26th May. The situation after 24 hours of combat, shown on the sketch map below, clearly indicates the commander's tactical concept and is in keeping with Rommel’s character
